Get Back to Moving Without Fear
Knee pain can make it difficult to walk, run, squat, climb stairs, exercises, or get up from a chair. You may have tried resting, wearing a brace, stretching, or avoiding certain activities, only for the pain to return when you become active again.
At Aim2Move Physiotherapy, we look beyond the location of your pain. Our goal is to identify the movement restrictions, strength deficits, and irritated tissues that may be contributing to your symptoms so we can build a treatment plan specifically for you.
What Can Cause Knee Pain
The knee depends on the hips, ankles, muscles, ligaments, tendons, surrounding joints working together. Two people may experience pain in the same area but need completely different treatment approaches.
Common causes and contributing factors include:
Meniscus Injuries:
The meniscus is a piece of cartilage that helps absorb force and stabilize the knee. An injury may cause pain along the joint line, swelling, stiffness, or clicking, catching, and locking sensations.
Runner’s Knee:
Runner’s knee, also known as patellofemoral pain, usually causes discomfort around or behind the knee cap. Symptoms may become more noticeable during running, squatting, climbing stairs, jumping, or sitting with the knee bent for extended periods.
Knee Arthritis:
Changes within the knee joint can contribute to pain, swelling, stiffness, and reduced movement. Although arthritis may appear on imaging, strength, mobility, balance, and movement mechanics also affect how the knee feels and functions.
ACL and Ligament Injuries:
The ligaments help stabilize the knee during walking, running, jumping, and changing directions. A ligament injury may cause pain, swelling, weakness, or the feeling that the knee could buckle or give way.
Patellar Tendinitis:
Patellar tendinitis, sometimes called jumper’s knee, affects the tendon below the knee cap. It commonly causes pain during jumping, running, squatting, climbing stairs, or getting up from a chair.
IT Band Syndrome:
The iliotibial band runs along the outside of the thigh and helps support the knee during movement. Irritation in this area can cause pain on the outside of the knee, especially during running, cycling, or repetitive bending.
Muscle Weakness and Movement Imbalances
Weakness or limited mobility in the hips, knees, or ankles can change how force travels through the knee. Poor control during squatting, running, landing, or changing directions may place additional stress on the joint.
