Get Back to Moving Without Fear
Neck pain can make it difficult to work, sleep, exercise, drive, or turn your head comfortably. You may also experience headaches, shoulder pain, stiffness, or symptoms that travel into your arm or hand. You may have tried stretching, massage, medication, or changing your pillow, only for your discomfort to return.
At Aim2Move Physiotherapy, we look beyond the location of your pain. Our goal is to identify the movement restrictions, strength deficits, and irritated tissues that may be contributing to your symptoms so we can build a treatment plan specifically for you.
What Can Cause Neck Pain
The neck depends on the joints, discs, muscles, nerves, shoulders, and upper back working together. Two people may experience pain in the same area but need completely different treatment approaches.
Common causes and contributing factors include:
Neck Muscle Strains:
Sudden movements, repetitive activity, stress, exercise, or prolonged positioning can strain the muscles supporting the neck. This may cause soreness, tightness, muscle spasms, or difficulty turning your head.
Tech Neck and Postural Pain:
Spending extended periods looking down at a phone or working at a computer can place additional stress on the neck and upper back. Symptoms may include stiffness, headaches, upper back discomfort, or aching around the shoulders.
Pinched Nerves and Cervical Radiculopathy:
Irritation or compression of a nerve in the neck may cause pain that travels into the shoulder, arm, or hand. Some people also experience numbness, tingling, or weakness.
Herniated or Bulging Cervical Discs:
The discs between the vertebrae help absorb force and support movement. When a cervical disc becomes irritated or changes position, it may contribute to neck pain, stiffness, or symptoms that travel into the arm.
Cervicogenic Headaches:
Some headaches originate from joints, muscles, or nerves in the neck. These headaches may begin at the base of the skull and travel toward to the forehead, temple, or behind the eye.
Whiplash:
Whiplash can occur when the head moves suddenly forward and backward, often during a car accident or sports injury. Symptoms may include neck pain, stiffness, headaches, dizziness, or shoulder discomfort.
Neck Arthritis and Degenerative Disc Disease:
Age- related changes within the joints and disc of the neck can contribute to pain, stiffness, and reduced movement. Although these changes may appear on imaging, strength, mobility, and movement mechanics also influence how the neck feels and functions.
