Get Back to Moving with More Confidence
Shoulder pain can make it difficult to reach overhead, lift weights, get dressed, sleep comfortably, or perform everyday activities. You may have tried resting, stretching, medication, or avoiding certain movements, only for the pain to return when you become active again.
At Aim2Move Physiotherapy, we look beyond the location of your pain. Our goal is to identify the mobility restrictions, strength deficits, movement patterns, and irritated tissues that may be contributing to your symptoms.
What Can Cause Shoulder Pain
The shoulder is a highly mobile joint that depends on several muscles, tendons, joints, and nerves working together. Two people may feel pain in the same area but need completely different treatment approaches.
Common causes and contributing factors include:
Rotator Cuff Injuries:
The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles and tendons that helps stabilize and move the shoulder. Irritation, weakness, or tearing can cause pain when lifting the arm, reaching overhead, exercising, or sleeping on the affected side.
Shoulder Impingement:
Shoulder impingement can occur when tissues around the shoulder become irritated or compressed during certain movements. It commonly causes pain when reaching overhead, lifting, or lowering the arm.
Shoulder Bursitis and Tendinitis:
Repetitive activity, increased exercise, or changes in shoulder mechanics can irritate the tendons or bursae around the joint. This may cause aching, tenderness, swelling, or pain with movement.
Frozen Shoulder:
Frozen shoulder can cause significant pain and a progressive loss of motion. Activities such as reaching behind your back, putting on a jacket, washing your hair, or reaching into a cabinet may become difficult.
Labral Injuries:
The labrum is a ring of cartilage that helps support the shoulder joint. A labral injury may cause deep shoulder pain, weakness, instability, or clicking and catching sensations during movement.
Shoulder Instability:
Shoulder instability occurs when the joint does not remain securely centered during movement. It may develop after a dislocation, repetitive overhead activity, or an injury and can create a feeling that the shoulder may shift, slip, or give way.
Pain Referred From the Neck:
Not all shoulder pain originates in the shoulder. Irritation in the neck may produce pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness that travels into the shoulder, arm, or hand.
